چکیده

The transforming growth factor-b (TGF-b) superfamily of structurally related ligands regulates essential signaling pathways that control many aspects of cell behavior in organisms across the phylogenetic spectrum. Here we report the identi®cation of maverick (mav), a gene that encodes a new member of the TGF-b superfamily in Drosophila. Phylogenetic analysis and sequence comparison suggest that Mav cannot be easily assigned to any one sub-family, since it is equally related to BMP, activin and TGF-b ligands. mav maps to the fourth chromosome and is expressed throughout development. In situ hybridization experiments reveal the presence of maternally derived mav transcript in precellular blastoderm embryos. Later in development, mav is expressed in a dynamic pattern in the developing gut, both in endodermal and visceral mesodermal cells. In adult females, high levels of mav mRNA are present in late stage egg chambers. q 2000 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

dally, a Drosophila glypican, controls cellular responses to the TGF-β-related morphogen, Dpp

Decapentaplegic (Dpp) is a Drosophila member of the Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGF-β)/Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) superfamily of growth factors. Dpp serves as a classical morphogen, where concentration gradients of this secreted factor control patterning over many cell dimensions. Regulating the level of Dpp signaling is therefore critical to its function during development. One type of...

Regulation of myostatin in vivo by GASP-1: a novel protein with protease inhibitor and follistatin domains

Myostatin, a member of the TGF−β superfamily, is a potent and specific negative regulator of skeletal muscle mass. In serum, myostatin circulates as part of a latent complex containing myostatin propeptide and/or follistatin-related gene (FLRG). Here, we report the identification of an additional protein associated with endogenous myostatin in normal mouse and human serum, discovered by affinit...

Sequence and expression of myoglianin, a novel Drosophila gene of the TGF-β superfamily

Various members of the TGF-beta superfamily of signaling molecules are known to have important roles in mesoderm patterning and differentiation during vertebrate and invertebrate embryogenesis. Here we characterize a new TGF-beta member from Drosophila, Myoglianin, that is most closely related to the vertebrate muscle differentiation factor Myostatin and to vertebrate BMP-11. Northern analysis ...

Gene Regulation Network Based Analysis Associated with TGF-beta Stimulation in Lung Adenocarcinoma Cells

Background: Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β is over-expressed in a wide variety of cancers such as lung adenocarcinoma. TGF-β plays a major role in cancer progression through regulating cancer cell proliferation and remodeling of the tumor micro-environment. However, it is still a great challenge to explain the phenotypic effects caused by TGF-β stimulation and the effect of TGF-β stimulatio...

Characterization of a gonad-specific transforming growth factor-β superfamily member differentially expressed during the reproductive cycle of the oyster Crassostrea gigas

Through differential screening between oyster families selected for high and low summer survival, we have characterized a new transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily member. This novel factor, named oyster-gonadal-TGFβ-like (og-TGFβ-like), is synthesized as a 307 amino acid precursor and displays 6 of the 7 characteristic cysteine residues of the C-terminal, mature peptide. Sequence co...
